Betobets - Sports betting, Wall-Street style

Overview

In 2013, Mexican Stock Broker and avid sports fan Alberto Uribe started playing a game. He decided to apply the mechanics of his day job — futures trading — to his love of betting on sports. At first Alberto and a group of friends would buy and sell futures based on sports tournaments while using a work platform chat. This not only limited trading on weekends, but also got them in hot water.

Alberto decided to open a group chat on Whatsapp, and coded a spreadsheet on Excel to keep track of all the trades and positions. As his chat group grew more and more popular, the demands of manually entering data into his Excel sheet became too much. Seeing a great potential in the model, he wanted to recreate his system into a web based application where users could trade and see their positions in real time.
